Each Barbary Wool rug is carefully designed and handcrafted from start to finish by Moroccan designers and artisans. Unlike many luxury brands in the world that don't know the origins of their materials and makers, we have our own established production process -from sheep to studio. Every individual in this chain is a Team Barbary professional, and here, in our World of Wool, we provide a transparent look into how we make our designer rugs.

The designs

With the heritage of Amazigh art and rugmaking running through its veins, Barbary Wool creates rug collections that tell stories in a new, high-design way, combining various artistic styles from the modern world together with age-old Berber tradition that the world knows. This mix of pure art reflects the evolution and potential of contemporary Berber craftsmanship, while always remaining deeply rooted in the traditional and cultural legacy that it carries.

Each collection we create is inspired by a specific element of life. We work with our Barbary weavers to refine the concepts and designs to arrive at a final vision. This is when we commence the second part of our process, creating the rugs we've designed.

The creation

Our journey of turning designs into reality begins high in the Atlas Mountains, where the finest quality raw wool is sourced. The fleece is sheared from the sheep with gentle care by our trusted Barbary shepherds, who are able to preserve its silky texture and pristine quality through decades of expertise.

The wool journeys from the mountains to our workshop, where it undergoes a meticulous process of washing, rinsing, carding, spinning, and dyeing, ensuring utmost cleanliness and purity. Each of these steps is carefully executed and repeated multiple times, resulting in rugs of exceptional softness and durability.

The weaving process is where the magic truly unfolds. Our skilled artisans intricately tie knots around pairs of warp threads to create the distinctive pile of the rug. With our commitment to excellence, we uphold a minimum knot density and pile height for each collection, ensuring that every Barbary Wool rug is a masterpiece in its own right.

Once woven, our rugs undergo a thorough washing process, where natural cleaning agents gently agitate the fibers to remove dirt and debris while preserving the integrity of the wool and enhancing its vibrant colors. Our washing process is completed 2 to 4 times the national industry standard. This is what gives our rugs the unique woolen softness that goes unmatched in the rug industry.

As per tradition, the rugs are then dried on mountaintops to harness the power of sunlight and fresh mountain air, allowing each rug to bask in the natural elements and emerge with renewed beauty and grace.
